The Great Glen Way

Recommended reading Cicerone Guide The Great Glen Way.

We did this trail during the latter part of April, it was warm and sunny everyday except one, when it rained nearly all day. When deciding when to go it is very advisable to consider the 'Midge Season'. This can start early May round to September, life can be pretty miserable in Scotland during this time

There is a good bus service along the A82 which helps if you book one place for a couple of nights.
It is possible to get the bus back to your last stop enabling you to move your car along, if you wish. There are plenty of baggage transport companies, Mr. Anderson at Guisachan House, Fort William has recommendations

FORT WILLIAM Guisachan House, Alma Road, 01397 703797. Excellent in every way, lovely rooms, very welcoming, nice sitting room, Good Breakfast. Near to town for evening meal. A Good start to the GGW.
Can leave car here by arrangement.

Gairlochy This is Mahaar at Spean Bridge, the rooms are very small, shared bathroom/shower toilet,  NO drying facilities.  Good breakfast.
3 miles off trail, Mr. Alan Muir will collect and take back to and from trail at £1 per person. 01397 712365
There are other places in the village plus an Hotel where you can get an evening meal.

Forest Lodge at South Laggan. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Bed & Breakfast, will supply evening meal if phoned in advance, or will transport to local restaurant where a very good meal can be found.

Fort Augustus has a few B & B's but we stayed self catering at the Chalet Park,
Telephone 01320 3666666
This was good, the Managers very helpful, will give lifts and get groceries if required, facilities excellent, i.e. fridges, washing machine, micro wave, cooker, (all brand new) loads of hot water, in fact all you need.
£1 coins needed for Electric Meter.
Several eating places in village within walking distance.

Drumnadrochit we stayed at the Drumnadrochit Hotel.

INVERNESS Ardross House 01463 241740, Lovely house, small rooms all en suite. Excellent breakfast, near to main town for evening meal and celebrations!.

The end of the Great Glen Way, now 600 miles or more back to Essex!, three drivers so not so bad, otherwise suggest that you stop off somewhere on the way home.

Bath

Mrs Muriel Guy, Bathwick Hill, Bath, BA2 4EH Tel 01225 465120.

This is one of those splendid Bath terrace houses, 5 stories high, graciously furnished.
A parking permit is required (available from Mrs Guy).
We dallied here to spend a day in Bath and were very comfortable and well looked after. Some rooms involve many(60)! steps.
Mrs Guy cooks the best breakfast ever! organic and locally sourced produce.

Highly Recommended

Cold Ashton

Laburnham Cottage, Hyde Lane 01225 891669 Mrs. Monica Baker.

This was a very comfortable B & B with an excellent breakfast.

They were buying more property in the village to make into B & B accommodation, so I think it is well worth ringing them first, very helpful indeed and right on the trail. Pub across the next footpath about 10mins away  for evening meals.

OLD SODBURY

Debbie Harris, 1 The Green 01454 314688

This was a cottage just off the Green and each room was let, so you would not be sure who was who in the house because the proprietor did not live in the house. She worked in the pub opposite, where a good meal could be had. The cottage was nice and relaxing as there was a sitting room and t.v. if required, also washing machine, so a good opportunity to catch up on the bit of washing! no need to take too much with you when it can be washed half way round.
Breakfast was all cooked for us and the other guests (we had a couple of Lads staying the same time as us) .

Wotton under edge

31a Long Street Synwell, 01453 860365

There is not much to say about this place. It used to be a tea rooms so is situated  in the High Street of the town of Synwell. Entrance is round the back and through the owners'  garden, you must use the right path, because the Lady of the house doesn't like people walking past her private quarters. Needless to say, one of us walked down the wrong path!
There are not many B & B's in this area.

Uley, Dursley

Hodgecombe Farm 01452 812459

This is the most beautiful farmhouse, in wonderful surroundings. The people made us SO welcome.
There was everything you could think of, including a tray with complimentary spirits!  It is one of those places you promise yourself that you will go back to one day.

Edge

Upper Doreys Mill 01452 812459

This place was difficult to find, tucked away down a lane, but when you found it, Oh, how lovely!

We were all shown our rooms in different parts of the house (Mill), I was up a winding staircase, which led to a large bedroom with it own bathroom and w.c.
The sitting room was very comfy and when we came back in the evening there was a huge log fire lit for us.  The garden was full of surprises, like a goldfish pond, Acer trees in pots, Breakfast was good.
All so welcoming

Dowdeswell Reservoir

The Waterside Inn Charlton Kings 01242 529671 is right on the trail. We had our evening meal here, we could have
stayed here had we known that they did B & B

Winchcombe

Gower House, 16 North Street 01242 602616
Mrs. Simmonds

Another very tastefully decorated house, lovely rooms with everything you needed. Right in the town, easy for evening meal and a spot of retail therapy.

Broadway

Old Station House, Broadway, Front of House

Old Station House, Station Drive  Mr. Trueman  01386 852659

A bit out of town, but very nice newly decorated rooms. Beautiful garden, people  a bit reserved, i.e. not very friendly, but all okay. Nice breakfast - Scrambled eggs with salmon, yummy!

Arrived at Chipping Campden, after our photo shoot, went by taxi back to Dorey's Mill where we had left our car, stayed here another night to celebrate!

Bed & Breakfast only. Nearby pubs serve good food.
Drying arrangements.
Packed lunches.
This is a superb B&B as is the location.

The proprietor, Ian Moseley, will accompany guests on walks
on certain days of the week, which is very helpful if you are
not sure of going alone in these very hilly areas.

The only B&B with a bar.
Well run establishment and good breakfasts.

Premier Travel Inn

Ruishton Lane, Taunton, Somerset, TA3 5LU. 08709 906534.
This was our only let down and we cannot recommend it,
also the most expensive.
Breakfast tea is teabag in a cup with water from an urn.
The one-price cooked breakfast is not value for money,
sugar for cereals is the sachet
type unless you are brave enough to request proper sugar, (we were brave)
The rooms reeked of cigarette smoke.
A definite NO NO. These places are geared
to businessmen on expense accounts in need of somewhere to lie down.

On the Monday Mrs Guy proudly sported her medallion for walking 15 miles in a charity event the day before.
